After-school routine checklist for kids

An after-school routine checklist is a fixed afternoon guide: lunchbox out of the bag, a snack, homework, outdoor time or a club, some screen time and pack the bag for tomorrow. Pin the card to the wall and your child knows exactly what to do next — without you having to ask. Available in three age variants for ages 4 to 12.

About this sheet

An after-school routine checklist is a fixed list of what needs to happen when your child gets home: lunchbox out of the bag, a snack, homework, outdoor time or an after-school club or aftercare program, a bit of free time and finally packing the bag for the next day. Instead of the afternoon turning into a negotiation about when to do homework, your child follows the same list every single day.

The sheet comes in three age variants. For ages 4–6, it's an icon-based card with just a few steps and pictures to follow, so your child can work through the routine without being able to read. For ages 7–9, it's a checklist with boxes to tick off. For ages 10–12, the checklist includes a time column so your child can write in set times for sports practice and after-school activities and take more independent control of their own afternoon.

Consistent routines take away a lot of the daily friction. When the order of tasks is decided in advance and visible on the wall, you don't need to remind your child of the same things every day — they can see what's next for themselves. That means calmer afternoons and children who gradually take more responsibility for their own tasks.

The single most impactful step is often the last one: packing the bag for tomorrow. A bag that's ready the night before means a much calmer morning — no hunting for gym clothes, no forgotten lunchboxes. Print the card in A4, pin it by the front door or on the fridge, and let your child check off each step as it's done.

What you get

  • Ready-made afternoon checklist: lunchbox, snack, homework, outdoor play, free time and pack the bag for tomorrow.
  • Three age variants: icon card to follow (ages 4–6), checklist with tick boxes (ages 7–9), and list with a time column (ages 10–12).
  • The 'pack your bag for tomorrow' step placed last on the list, for calmer mornings.
  • Large picture icons for younger children who aren't reading yet.
  • Name field at the top, ready to pin by the front door or on the fridge.

How to use it

  1. Choose the age variant. Pick the icon card (ages 4–6), the checklist with tick boxes (ages 7–9), or the list with a time column for independent planning (ages 10–12).
  2. Pin it somewhere visible. Print the sheet in A4 and pin it by the front door or on the fridge, where your child will see it the moment they walk in.
  3. Follow the list every day. Work through the steps from top to bottom and check off each one as it's done. After a couple of weeks, the routine becomes automatic.

Frequently asked questions

How do I build a good after-school routine for my child?
Decide on a fixed order for what happens after school — snack, homework, outdoor play and packing the bag — and put the list somewhere visible. When the sequence is the same every day, it becomes a habit your child follows without needing reminders.
What should an after-school routine include?
The most common steps are emptying the lunchbox, having a snack, doing homework, getting outside or going to a club or aftercare program, some free or screen time, and packing the bag for the next day. For older children, it helps to include set times for regular activities like sports practice.
What age is an after-school routine chart for?
The sheet is available from ages 4–6 with picture icons to follow, up to ages 10–12 with a time column for more independence. Younger children follow the pictures, while older ones manage their afternoon with more autonomy.
Is the routine checklist free to print?
Yes. Download it as a free PDF with no sign-up and print at home on A4 paper. Laminate it or slip it into a plastic sleeve so your child can check off each step every day and start fresh the next morning.
