The alternatives to Skylight Calendar — for families in Europe

Skylight Calendar is the best-known calendar display in the US, but buying it from Europe means shipping, import duties and VAT on top of the ~$300 price, an English-only interface, and a Plus subscription for several features. Here are the alternatives that actually make sense from Europe — from ready-made family displays to DIY with a tablet.

  • Zenframe Display — the Nordic alternative. Calendar display and photo frame in one, with meal planning, chores and routines. From 2,490 NOK as a one-time purchase with 1 year of Family included — shipped from Norway. See the full Zenframe Display
  • DAKboard — for tinkerers. DAKboard is software you point at your own screen or TV. Flexible and good-looking, but you do the setup yourself and most features require a subscription.
  • Hearth Display — the premium pick. Hearth is a large, polished family display from the US with chores and routines — but it runs about $700 plus a subscription, and does not ship to Europe.
  • Cozyla and other frames with a calendar. Some digital photo frames (like Cozyla) also show a calendar. Affordable, but English-first and without European school schedules or meal planning.
  • A wall-mounted tablet — the free route. An old tablet with Google Calendar in full screen costs almost nothing, but needs waking, charging and maintenance — and only shows the calendar.
  • Frameo — if photos are the real need. If it's the photos, not the calendar, a Frameo frame is a good, affordable choice — but it has no calendar at all. Frameo vs Skylight — the full comparison
  1. Import fees and subscriptions add up. Skylight shipped to Europe quickly passes €400 plus a yearly fee. Always compare one-time price + shipping/import + subscription over two–three years.
  2. Languages, sports clubs and school schedules. A family display is only useful if it shows what your family actually needs — check language support and how calendars, sports teams and school schedules get in.
  3. Hang it up, or maintain it yourself. DAKboard and tablets give you freedom, but you are the caretaker. A ready-made display is hung up, connected to wifi once, and just works.
